Seven students and five parents from our 7-8 grade class recently visited Washington DC. Our group joined up with Merced Christian School for the 7 day tour. Jamestown Settlement, Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Gettysburg were special points of interest visited besides Washington DC itself. Students toured inside the Pentagon and the White House. Parents waiting outside the White House had an unexpected surprise as President Bush drove by and waved at them! Needless to say, the kids felt that the parents had the better view that day. At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery students watched as four students from the group were privileged to lay a wreath at the tomb. Our own Brooke Dykstra won an essay contest on “Why I’m Proud to Be an American†which qualified her to be one of the four. Our travelers will still be working on fundraisers throughout the year to pay themselves back for the cost of the trip. Overall, it was well worth the investment and a once in a lifetime opportunity.
